San Jose is creating thousands of new shelter beds and tiny homes for our homeless neighbors.
It is just common sense to require that people come in off our streets, creeks, and parks and use this new shelter. Mayor Matt Mahan is proposing a Responsibility to Shelter ordinance that will make it a trespassing violation if a homeless person refuses shelter three times.
Someone who won’t come indoors after three requests over 18 months is damaging our community – but more importantly, they pose a danger to themselves. The compassionate approach is to require they come indoors; or if they keep refusing shelter, a brief interaction with law enforcement to get them into county treatment programs.
